Alexander Chitungo is one of Zimbabwe’s young up-coming artists, who have emerged since independence in 1980. Alexander was born on the 3rd of August in a small town in Marondera. He is the second born in a family of six children. He has two brothers and three sisters. He started his primary school at Tomlinson Primary School and completed O Levels at one of the best schools in Harare, Prince Edward in 1986. In 1990 he begun sculpturing seriously as a result of contacts with Tenderai Marezva and Lincoln Mutetwa, who were renowned artists in their own rights. He worked with them for only two years before leaving as he strongly felt the need to be on his own to develop his own style. He uses the theme ‘Voices of Reality’ and one of his works, called ‘Fertility” is an excellent example of this. More recent works express the refined workmanship. Alexander has held group exhibitions in and outside the country - The Gallery (Bermuda, USA) Mobil Group Exhibition (Harare) J Latham Gallery (Oakland, Ca) AAA Summit Exhibition (Sheraton Harare) Stadsmuseum Zoetermeer (The Netherlands)
